The Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) was once predicted to be the next big thing in consumer tech. Apple had the Newton, for example, and Microsoft had the Pocket PC. Both were attempts by the respective companies to get their feet in the door of the new market, but in the end, the PDA wasn't as successful as some hoped. At the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, though, startup company Planet Computers is undeterred. On Sunday, it announced a new take on the PDA: The Gemini, an Android clamshell device.
Today, most people can use their smartphones as organizers, but the Gemini's uniquely tailored for productivity. It has an 18:9 ultra-wide Full HD display paired with a compact keyboard, and a 10-core MediaTek Helio X27 system-on-chip paired with 4GB of RAM. There's a 4,220mAh battery inside, and two USB Type-C ports.
The downside of all those components is that the Gemini's a little on the thick side (15.1mm thick), but that's a small price to pay for a powerful pocket PC. We're told that it runs a close version of Android, and you can dual-boot into Linux for more customization.
Planet Computers says you'll be able to get the Gemini from Indiegogo for $400, but the ship date has yet to be revealed.
