The ZTE Axon 7 is one of the top choices in the affordable flagship category. While many other OEMs went in for premium specifications at premium prices, ZTE was among the few who tried to give the user the best value for their money. The Axon 7 was praised for its hardware, losing points only on the software which users might need to get used to.
ZTE plans to give its users one more reason to buy from the OEM, as it starts rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat for its Axon 7 flagship today. In addition to upgrading the Android version, this update also brings in Daydream VR support and compatibility to the device. This makes the ZTE Axon 7 one of the cheapest phones in the market which supports Google's Daydream VR.
Other points worth noting from the update is the Security Patch update to December 2016. The update also adds in Hiya Caller ID and Blocking to the device. ZTE is collaborating with Hiya to provide free caller ID, spam protection and call blocking for consumers in the US. We do not know if this "integration" comes in the form of a removable app or a system app, so we'd like to hold back our criticism for adding unnecessary bloatware until we find that out.
The changelog of the update is as follows:
- Android OS Upgraded from 6.0.1 to 7.0.
- Axon 7 A2017U is Now Daydream Ready!
- Camera RAW Implemented in Manual Mode and Enhanced Auto-Focus for Camera.
- Google Security Patch Updated to December 2016.
- Various Device Stability and Security Improvements.
- Hiya Caller ID/Blocking added to default dialer.
- Miscellaneous Performance Improvements and other Enhancements.
For special instructions, ZTE notes that a manual restart is needed after the update. The OTA for the update is rolling out today, and as rollouts are often in phases, all devices will get the update sooner or later.
