Amazon’s Touchscreen Echo Show Announced; Alexa updated with Voice Calls

Just a few days ago we presented leaks of the mysterious Amazon speaker. Now we can finally confirm them, as the device was officially announced yesterday. The first Amazon Echo Show units will ship to customers in late June.

We finally know what's inside of the speaker. Amazon is packing an Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor into the Echo Show. It will also have a 7″ touchscreen, a 5 MP camera and dual 2-inch stereo speakers. Everything will be fit inside the 7.4" x 7.4" x 3.5" frame and it will weigh just over 1 kg. Finally, Amazon Echo Show will have dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz) 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The latter allows connecting external devices (eg. speakers). As expected, the device comes in two color variants.

In the following video, we can see the speaker in action. The device can be used for video calls and various other tasks. It can play videos, music, or even control the Bluetooth devices. Everything is just a few voice commands away.

Amazon will also release an updated Alexa Skills Set. It will be useful for developers, as they will be able to add touchscreen interfaces to their Alexa skills.

Speaking of Alexa: Amazon has announced a couple of features that will come to their voice assistant. Users will have the ability to call their friends and family that use an Echo device or the Alexa App. Calls can be initiated or answered by voice commands. Finally, Amazon has also announced a feature called Drop In. This feature is reserved for your closest family and friends. For example, when a user wants to drop in to check on an elderly relative, let the family know it's time for dinner, or check on the baby in the nursery, Drop In can be activated on specified devices.

Amazon Echo Show is available for pre-order right now. The device costs $229.99. If you are planning to get two speakers, Amazon has a discount coupon for $100. The code you need to enter is SHOW2PACK which brings the total price down to $359.98.
