Just when you think it can't get worse and that HTC is finally able to start turning things around, a new financial report hits. The struggle of this Taiwanese handset maker is something that we've been covering quite extensively over the last few years. Throughout 2017, the company has been reporting around NT$4 billion in overall revenue each month but this saw an increase to NT$6.8 billion and NT$6.1 billion for the the months of June and July.
This made sense because HTC had released their latest flagship, the HTC U11, in June and thus many were hoping they would continue this increase in revenue as it reached more markets. Their financial report from June even showed a 52% increase MoM and an increase of 8.3% YoY. Now though, we now have smartphones like the LG V30 and the Galaxy Note, which and are likely eating into the sales that HTC was hoping to achieve.
Revenues for the month of August are now confirmed to be NT$3 billion (which is about $99.69 million), the lowest it has been in a staggering 13 years. This shows a drop of 51.5% when compared to last month and a drop of 54.3% when compared to August of last year. Still, the company is hopeful as they're still up for the quarter compared to what they were estimating, and they will soon be shipping the smaller of the two new Pixel phones soon.
This specific report from DigiTimes even cites a different report from the Commercial Times which claims HTC has entered the final stage of negotiation with Google for selling its smartphone business unit. This is something a lot of people would love to see, and if true, it will be interesting to see how this pans out this time around.
