When rumors started to stir about a squeeze feature for an HTC smartphone, many people instantly said it would be nothing more than a gimmick. Some though, wondered how it would be implemented and if it would be convenient enough to use during everyday use. Then the company released the HTC U11 and Edge Sense was born with the device receiving some favorable reviews from multiple publications. Since launch, HTC has been expanding the capabilities of this feature and a new beta update takes it even further.
For the most part, Edge Sense has been rather limited with functions like taking a photo, launching an application, pulling up your assistant and triggering an audio recording. While definitely a convenience, many felt that HTC could do more and a 3rd-party application does make it more functional. HTC is aware that people want to do more with the feature so a new beta update to the Edge Sense application will be released tonight that does just that.
The Verge was able to get their hands on the application update early and while they thought it was a gimmick, this update seems to have changed their mind in certain areas. The biggest new feature with the beta update to Edge Sense is that you can set up your own per-application actions for when you squeeze the sides of the HTC U11. This is interesting as it creates an overlay on top of any application you select. Then you choose a tap or double-tap point anywhere on the screen.
So once it has been set, when you do that squeeze action inside the designated application, the tap or double-tap action is triggered without you having to touch the screen. A great example of this in action is a media player where you can simply squeeze the screen to play or pause whatever it is you're listening to or watching. This is a beta update so some bugs are to be expected, and it will only be useful for applications due to how dynamic the UI elements can be, but it's definitely interesting to see HTC experiment like this.
