Google released Android 8.0 Oreo back in August of this year. Supported Nexus and Pixel devices have been enjoying the latest version of Android for a while now, but most original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) haven't gotten around to updating their devices yet. As 2017 comes to a close, though, we're expecting to see an increasing number of smartphones to get a taste of Oreo, and Huawei's might be the first out of the gate. On Thursday, the smartphone maker announced the launch of an Android Oreo early adopter's program for the Honor 9 and Honor V9.
The Honor 9 and the Honor V9, which launched in early 2017, both shipped with Huawei's Android 7.0 Nougat-based EMUI 5 skin. The Oreo beta upgrades Huawei's EMUI skin to version 8.0, and packs improvements such as picture-in-picture mode, battery-saving limits on background processes, and granular notifications settings.
Prior to the launch of today's early adopter program, Huawei's tested EMUI 8 and Android 8.0 Oreo on a handful of devices — mainly the P10 and the P10 Plus. Those, too, are beta tests, but the influx of Ore-based software updates could be a sign that a public, stable release is right around the corner.
If you're the proud owner of a Honor 9 or the Honor V9 and willing to give the Oreo update a go, you'll need to sign up via Huawei's Member Service application. It's not an open beta at the moment — Huawei says it's capping the number of enrollees, and that it's a first-come, first serve deal — but if you manage to get in, you'll get an over-the-air update to EMUI 8.0 version B323.
