The Reliance JioPhone Feature Phone is Getting the Google Assistant

The Reliance JioPhone, a feature phone with limited applications, is an effectively free phone which has launched in India, though with limited numbers due to the massive demand for one. The phone has a deposit of Rs 1,500 ($23), refundable after three years on returning the phone. You also have to purchase a plan to use the phone, but costing as little as Rs 153 ($2) monthly means that isn't a big deal. Pre-booking for the Reliance JioPhone has closed due to the extremely high demand, and the demand is about to be even higher thanks to Google's latest announcement at the Google for India event in New Delhi. The phone will soon receive the smarter Google Assistant, replacing the current virtual assistant which comes with the device and making the device a contender for one of the best feature phones around.

The Google Assistant will be able to do nearly all of the things it can do on Android, including play music and videos stored on the SD card and make calls and send texts with voice commands given in English or in Hindi. It is currently unknown when the rollout will begin, but it's possible it will be in the coming weeks. This marks the first feature phone to receive the Google Assistant, as nearly all Android devices have it now including Android Wear devices.

The Reliance JioPhone is a 4G enabled phone powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 205, 512MBs of RAM, 4GB storage expandable with a microSD card, a 2.4-inch display and a 2000 mAh battery. It runs on Kai OS, a modification of Firefox OS, and comes with a YouTube app and a Facebook app with support for installing other applications through the Kai OS app store, such as unofficial WhatsApp clients. These applications are written using HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Will more feature phones launch with the Google Assistant?
