VLC v2.5 Update Brings a New Dynamic UI, PiP Mode, and More

It has been well over a year since the stable version of VLC Media Player for Android application last received an update. This week, though, the developers announced version 2.5 and even mentions some changes that are going into the next big version 3.0 update. We have learned that there has been a lot of work done on the smartphone user experience and user interface aspect of the player, it has received support for Picture-in-Picture mode, and the Android TV interface has been updated as well.

VLC had become one of the most popular video players on the PC platform, but the team took a long time to get something published and available for Android. There are some great media players in the Play Store right now, but the folks behind VLC have been working on many improvements since their last major update (version 2.0). We're told that VLC for Android releases have been trapped in preparation of version 3.0 due to some big media library refactoring black holes.

Version 2.5 has been announced meanwhile and as mentioned this comes with a lot of visual changes with the new dynamic UI being the featured change here. Video cards have now been refactored, audio lists have been slightly lifted, and other list views have also been reworked (such as audio media, browsers, and history). The developers have said they basically ditched the previous cardview pattern and have gone back to and more flat and clean design.

The background of the new audio player now displays a blurred version of current art cover if available. VLC has received support for Android Oreo's new Picture-in-Picture mode and the Android TV interface has been tweaked so the background is filled with blurred covers. This version of VLC will also bring Android Auto compatibility as well as Chrome OS support, 360-degree videos, and a split search mode. Be sure to check for the details of these changes and more in the announcement article linked below.
