Xiaomi Gives a Sneak Preview of the Redmi 5 Ahead of December 7 Launch

Over the course of past few weeks, Xiaomi's upcoming budget smartphones, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus, have leaked in earest. Both devices are expected to be unveiled at a December 7 launch event in China, and while we're still a few days away, Donovan Sung, Xiaomi's Global Spokesperson, took to Twitter to give a sneak preview of the Redmi 5.

Mr. Sung shared four images of the Redmi 5, giving a closer look at the smartphone's design. Judging by the pictures, a tall 18:9 display with very slim bezels dominates the smartphone's front, which lacks capactive buttons.

On the back of the Redmi 5, there appears to be a camera sensor, an LED flash module, and a fingerprint sensor perpendicular to the phone's plastic top and bottom caps. Thankfully, it appears to retain its predecessor's 3.5mm headphone jack and IR blaster, and comes in three colors: Black, soft gold, and blue.

While the tweet didn't give details about the specifications, we have a fair idea of what to expect. The TENAA listing of the Redmi 5 showed a 5.7-inch HD+ (1440×720) display with an aspect ratio of 18:9 — a first for Xiaomi — and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 octa-core chipset. It'll be offered in three RAM/storage configurations — 2GB RAM/16GB storage, 3GB /32GB, and 4GB/64GB — and it's is expected to pack a 3300mAh capacity battery, a step down from the 4100mAh battery on the Redmi 4/X.

There will be a Plus variant in the form of the Redmi 5 Plus, which will be identical to the Redmi 5 except for a Snapdragon 625 octa-core chipset, a bigger 5.99-inch Full HD+ display, and a denser 4000mAh battery. And it'll Redmi 5 Plus come in two variants: One with 3GB of RAM + 32GB of storage, and another with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.
