Android Oreo Beta Program Launched for the International Huawei P10 and P10 Plus

By now, quite a few smartphone vendors have launched beta programs for the Android Oreo update for their smartphones. The growing list of vendors include Samsung, Essential, HMD Global, OnePlus, Xiaomi, LG, and Huawei. Up until now, we have seen Huawei launch the Android 8.0 Oreo beta program for the Mate 9, Honor 9, and Honor V9. The company has rolled-out the stable Android Oreo update to the Mate 9 as well as the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus in China, but the international variants of these devices haven't received the stable updates so far.

Now, the international Huawei P10 and P10 Plus are being added to the list of devices which have an Android Oreo beta program. Huawei Mobile Romania has announced that the beta program for both devices (that were launched in February 2017) is now live, and the company is looking for beta testers for the Android Oreo update. The beta program targets the P10 and the P10 Plus with the following software versions: VTR-L09C432B180, VTR-L29C432B180, VKY-L09C432B181, and VKY-L29C432B181.

In order to join the beta program, users need to install Huawei's beta app and apply from the app. After joining, they will automatically receive an OTA update notification, which they can select to update their device to the beta. They can report issues through the app, and can also quit the beta program by sending a waiver request if they no longer wish to receive beta updates.

It should be noted that users in the XDA Forums have reported that a closed Oreo beta program for the P10 and P10 Plus has been underway since at least October.

In November, we reported that the Huawei Mate 9's Oreo build contained support for Project Treble. This allowed us to boot a stock AOSP ROM on the device—a huge development for custom ROMs. The company seems to have gone all-in with Treble support, so it's likely that support for it will be present in the Oreo beta builds for the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus. While this assumption isn't confirmed yet, we will likely know the answer soon.
