The Google Assistant, Google's AI-powered digital helper, has a dominating presence at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show thanks to a number of new third-party integrations. Satellite TV provider DISH is the latest: It's entered into a partnership with Google to enable the Google Assistant on its hands-free TV platform. In the coming weeks, DISH customers with a Hopper, Joey, or Wally set-top box will be able to use a Google Home speaker or Android/iOS smartphone to control their TVs in multiple languages, including English and Spanish.
Setting up the Assistant on a DISH receiver requires completing a one-time process. But once that's done, the Google Assistant can be used to perform a variety of tasks such as navigating, playing, pausing, fast-forwarding, and rewinding content. It can also search TV movies and shows based on channel, title, actor, and genre.
It's worth noting that the Google Assistant integration is similar to the Alexa integration DISH undertook in May 2017. And it complements DISH's second-generation voice remote that ships free with new Hopper receivers.
Once thing's for sure: The battle of voice assistants has been heating up, and Google is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to close the gap with competitors.
