After being leaked in live photos and hands-on video, the Xiaomi Redmi S2 has been launched at an event in China. This product is placed below the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 in Xiaomi's domestic market and should offer some more choice to potential customers on a tighter budget.
The Xiaomi Redmi S2 follows along Xiaomi's newer design language, one that bears a close resemblance to the Apple iPhone X thanks to the placement and design of the dual rear camera module. Since the device comes with a 5.99″ HD+ display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, there are no capacitive buttons on the front. The fingerprint scanner also consequently finds its way onto the back of the device.
On the inside, the Redmi S2 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC. For RAM and storage, you can either get the 3GB RAM plus 32GB storage variant or the 4GB RAM plus 64GB storage variant. You also have the option of expandable storage up to 256GB. While the Redmi S2 retains the 3.5mm headphone jack, it also sticks with a micro-USB port to charge its 3,080 mAh battery.
The camera setup on the Redmi S2 starts off with a 16MP front sensor, while the rear camera setup involves a 12MP primary sensor and a 5MP secondary sensor (similar to what is found on the Redmi Note 5 Pro). The Redmi S2 boasts an "AI Portrait Mode," though we would take the use of the word "AI" with a pinch of salt.
The most notable feature on the Redmi S2, in our opinion, is that the device launches with MIUI 9 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo. This means that the device will be Project Treble compatible, allowing skilled users to completely forego MIUI and run an AOSP based ROM instead, without too many hassles. Combined with the thriving development community seen on other budget Xiaomi devices, this does bode well for the future of this budget device.
The Xiaomi Redmi S2 starts at CNY 999 (~₹10,500; $160) for the 3GB+32GB variant and goes up to CNY 1,299 (₹13,700; $205) for the 4GB+64GB variant. The device will go on sale in China soon, though we do expect it to show up in India as well in the future.
