As we begin another month here at XDA (where does the time go?), Google has released an updated set of distribution numbers for Android. This data was collected during a 7-day period that ended on February 6, 2017. So while it is a decent amount of time to collect data for information like this, actual numbers could vary slightly.
Still, since Google is always using a 7-day period for these numbers then we're at least getting consistent results from month to month.
First up, we can see that Android 7.0 and 7.1 Nougat finally take up over 1% of the active user base (1.2% compared to 0.7% from last month). As more OEMs release devices with Nougat pre-installed then this number will drastically start to go up. However, since we're still seeing the majority of OEMs launching devices these days with Marshmallow, this is the number that most are looking at. Android 6.0 Marshmallow took up 30.7% of the market this month, while it was a slightly lower 29.6% last month.
In the lead we have Android 5.0 and Android 5.1 Lollipop as it has been able to amass 32.9% of active devices. This number is slowly going down as more OEMs launch devices with Marshmallow and Nougat, and we saw this number at 33.5% last month. Android 4.4 KitKat is in 3rd place still with 21.9% of the market, which is also down from 22.6% when compared to January's distribution numbers. The rest of this month's active devices are those which are still using Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread.
So we can see Android 4.1.x, 4.2.x and 4.3 Jelly Bean is being used by 11.3% of devices that are logging into the Google Play Store. This has only dropped 0.3% compared to last month. Finally, both Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread are being used by 1% of the active devices (each). That's the same numbers we saw for Gingerbread in January, but a drop of 0.1% for Ice Cream Sandwich.
