UMi Z Hands On

The UMi Z comes from a fast growing Chinese upstart that has been pushing out phones with flagship specs at super low prices. The UMi is the latest in their lineup and today we are taking a hands on look at this device.

The full metal unibody has a premium feel to it. The surface is smooth and cool to the touch. It's also lighter than you'd expect at only 175g. The simple design of the phone is really nice and keeps everything looking super clean.

The 5.5-inch display has impressively thin side bezels that surround the FHD display. The screen is plenty bright and features a display which is manufactured by Sharp. The display has great viewing angles and high color saturation. Videos and pictures really look good on this screen.

We ran Geekbench to see how the new Helio X27 scores. The performance of this chip falls somewhere in between the Snapdragon 820 and the Exynos 8890. You can't really ask for much more than that, especially at a price point lower than $300. The Helio X27 Deca-Core CPU is clocked at 2.6GHz, the top tier of the X20 family.

The processor uses the Tri-Cluster CPU architecture which allows the CPU to activate the most powerful cores only when necessary, while using the more energy-saving ones for simpler tasks. So you'll find that games will perform very well and battery life is extended during down times.

We checked out two of the cases made by UMi. The flip cover has a hole in the front where you can customize your clock style. You can also perform most of your simple tasks by interacting with your screen through the case opening.

The Z shaped case comes free with the phone. While leaving most of the body exposed, the corner bumpers will offer a bit of protection if dropped.

The last thing that we found very notable was the 3780mAh high density battery. This battery paired with the Hilio X27 means you'll easily be able to last through the day.
