Honor to Launch More Budget Phones in the Sub-₹10,000 Price Bracket in India

In recent months, Huawei's subsidiary Honor has been aggressively pursuing the Indian smartphone market. After launching the flagship Honor 8 Pro earlier this year, Honor announced last month that it would bring the Honor 7X to India in December. The company stated that it would do so at an unbeatable price, such that it would have "no competition."

Registrations for the device started on Amazon last month, and two days ago, the company released the Honor 7X for international markets. In India, the device is available starting today for a price tag of ₹12,999 (~$201) for the 4GB RAM and 32GB storage variant while the 64GB storage variant costs ₹15,999 (~$248).

Now, Honor Global President George Zhao has said in London that the company is planning to bring in more sub-₹ 10,000 phones next year.  Mr. Zhao told IANS that in three years time, Honor wants to be the number one smartphone manufacturer in India. He added that the company would launch more budget phones or sub-₹10,000 phones in India in 2018. By sub-Rs. 10,000, Mr. Zhao referred to phones like the Honor Bee, which was launched in India earlier this year.

Moving on to the quantity of phones launched in a single year, it should be noted that Huawei's subsidiary has launched nearly ten phones in India in 2017. The company stated that it would like to launch a similar number of devices in 2018 too. Mr. Zhao stated that the company wants to launch "competitive" and "unbeatable" products in India. He continued by adding that their aim was to be the "killer or king in the sector."

Mr. Zhao also stated that the newly launched Honor 7X and the upcoming View 10 would both be manufactured in India. The Honor View 10 will launch in India on January 8, but the pricing hasn't been revealed yet. Other officials from the company stated that the device will be priced "attractively for the Indian market." For reference, the brand's latest flagship launch in India, the Honor 8 Pro, carried a price tag of ₹29,999 for 6GBs of RAM with 128GBs of storage.

The officials stated: "India is our special market. Online market in India is a very, very important churner." They also added that with the average age of consumers in India being below 30 years, the company decided to bring Honor-branded handsets instead of Huawei.

The fact that India has more than 40% online penetration was noted by the officials, who added that they were focused more on the consumers instead of focusing only on channels. Finally, they clarified that phones which were placed in the Honor V-series earlier will be upgraded to 'View' series in the future, after the launch of the View 10.

In our view, the company has started finding momentum in the Indian smartphone market, but there remains a lot of work that needs to be done before the company catches up with the market leaders: Samsung and Xiaomi. However, the company has said that it intends to fight its way to the top, so we are waiting to see how things play out in the future.
