YouTube TV had a rocky start when it launched back in April of last year. The cord-cutting TV service wasn't initially available in many markets and wasn't available on that many devices, either. Over time, though, Google worked to improve YouTube TV in a number of ways, and it's finally starting to become a viable option for those who want to break away from local cable TV providers. On Wednesday, Google announced the addition of new channels including CNN, Cartoon Network, and TBS. It also announced March 13 as the sign up cutoff date for the current $35-per-month subscription plan.
When Google launched YouTube TV in 2017, it was only available in New York, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and Philadelphia. Google quckly expanded the service to 10 additional markets, then to another 34 metro areas. Now, YouTube TV is available in over 100 U.S. markets — more than 85% of U.S. households.
A complaint a lot of people had about YouTube TV was its limited device availability. (It took months before the Android TV application launched.) But Google has continued to improve this as well, most recently with the launch of an application for Roku devices.
The big announcement today touched on a couple of the components of YouTube TV. Programming additions to the base subscription include TNT, Adult Swim, TBS, CNN, Cartoon Network, truTV, Turner Classic Movies, and more. Sports lovers will be able to watch March Madness as well as nationally televised NBA games, NBA All-Star weekend, NBA Playoff games, MLB Postseason games, the PGA Championship, and soccer from the UEFA Champions League. And soon, subscribers will have access to NBA TV, the NBA League Pass, the MLB Network, or the MLB.TV for an additional fee.
Finally, Google announced that on March 13, the monthly price of the base YouTube TV service will be going up to $40 per month. This is the price that people who signed up on iPhone or iPad devices were already paying, but that will likely go up by $5 as well. If you sign up before March 13, you'll be grandfathered in to the $35 plan.
