HTC unveiled the U11 last May and released a mid-cycle refresh in the form of the HTC U11+ in November. In the last few weeks, rumors about HTC's 2018 flagship smartphone, the HTC U12, have been increasing. Two days ago, renowned leaker @LlabTooFeR posted most of the leaked specifications of the device.
The leaked specifications for the U12 (codenamed "Imagine") include the Snapdragon 845 SoC, up to 6GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, and a 5.99-inch Quad HD+ (2880×1440) display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. HTC stated last year that it would definitely release a dual camera device this year and the U12 fits the bill. It will have a 12MP + 16MP dual rear camera setup (with the primary camera using the Sony IMX363 sensor), and an 8MP front camera.
The U12 will have a 3420mAh battery, which is bigger than the 3000mAh battery of the U11. However, it's smaller than the 3900mAh battery of the U11+. The device will also come with Android Oreo and thus have Project Treble. It is also said to come with an A/B partition, which has been used by a few devices so far. IP68 certification, HTC Face Unlock, and Edge Sense 2.0 will all be included. Finally, it will come in both single SIM and dual SIM versions.
Now, a new report by HTC Source has shared some details about the design of the upcoming U12. The publication states that the phone will share "some design similarities with the HTC U11 and the HTC U11+", but it will have a few unique characteristics to evolve HTC's Liquid Surface design language. The U12 will feature a metal frame being sandwiched between curved glass on the front and back of the device, just like the U11. Also, the fingerprint sensor will be located on the back of the phone with the dual camera like the U11+.
The exact design of the phone is still said to be a secret, but HTC Source states that HTC is developing a new matte finish, which is a unique approach to a phone with a glass back. Phones with matte white glass backs are definitely rare, though it's worth noting that Sony used frosted glass backs with a matte finish in the Xperia Z5 series in 2015.
We expect to learn more about the HTC U12 in the time leading up to its official announcement (the time frame for which is still unknown).
