Sony hasn’t actually confirmed which Xperia devices will get Android Pie

Sony Xperia

It has only been a little over a week since Google officially released Android Pie for the Pixel and Pixel 2, but since then we've already seen Essential release the official stable update, Xiaomi release an updated build for the Mi Mix 2S, HMD Global and OnePlus prepare for the update with a new beta for the Nokia 7 Plus and OnePlus 6 respectively, and Vivo and Motorola commit to updating their devices. Last week, a widely circulated report claimed that Sony had confirmed that the Android Pie update will roll out for 6 Xperia models between September to November. However, we reached out to Sony Mobile's PR and were told that this list and timeline are unconfirmed.

A report from GizChina, which at the time of publication did not name a source for the information (we since reached out to them and they pointed us to this MyDrivers article as the source), stated that the Xperia XZ2, Xperia XZ2 Compact, Xperia XZ2 Premium, Xperia XZ1, Xperia XZ1 Compact, and Xperia XZ Premium will receive the update. The MyDrivers article sadly does not mention the source for their information nor does it state that their team received official confirmation from Sony, so we have no way to verify if the original report is true. In any case, it's reasonable to assume those devices will get the Android Pie update given that they're flagship devices released within the past 2 years. As reported by XperiaBlog, Sony Mobile's official update policy is as follows:

"We aim to support all premium range devices with the latest Android updates for two years after the device has launched. We may choose not to upgrade a mid-range or entry-level device if testing does not meet our exacting standards and we feel the hardware isn't capable of delivering a stable user experience."

Therefore, while the aforementioned Xperia flagships will definitely get the Android Pie update, there's a chance that other recently released Sony devices will too. After all, OnePlus surprised us all by promising Android 9 Pie for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T—perhaps Sony might do the same for some of their higher-end mid-range devices. We don't know which models will get the update and when, but our contact at Sony Mobile PR wants users to keep an eye out on their official blog and @SonyMobileNews Twitter feed for the official Android 9 Pie update roadmap which we're told will be unveiled soon. Once Sony confirms their Pie update roadmap, we'll let you all know.
