After Huawei, it looks like one more Chinese smartphone maker is set to enter Android Wear space. The latest report coming out of VentureBeat reveals that ZTE is working on a new Android Wear watch and that it will be called ZTE Quartz. The details regarding the key specifications are not available as of now, but the watch is expected to boast UMTS 3G cellular connectivity along with WiFi. The ZTE Quartz was recently spotted receiving Bluetooth certification with the model number ZW10. The image shared by VentureBeat shows the ZTE Quartz will feature a circular watch face.
It's not like ZTE has never released a wearable before, the company had released the Venus 1 and Venus 2, at MWC in Barcelona last year, but those were focused heavily on fitness rather than a smartwatch. If the report is indeed true, the ZTE Quartz will mark a first-ever Android Wear watch manufactured by the Chinese OEM. It's unclear when the ZTE Quartz will officially launch, though given that MWC 2017 is just around the corner, we could get to see an official announcement at the show.
With Google and LG allegedly collaborating for the upcoming two Android Wear smartwatches and Huawei reportedly working on a successor to its year-old Huawei Watch model, it will be interesting to see whether or not new hardware launches this year will help Android Wear platform to take off.
It's worth noting that Google is expected to launch Android Wear 2.0 platform update today, along with the two new Android Wear watches: the LG Watch Style and LG Watch Sport.
